Intel on Thursday unveiled the industry’s first quad-core processors, named Xeon 7300, specifically designed for multi-processor (MP) servers running applications requiring uncompromised performance, reliability and scalability. The launch comes days before AMD, Intel’s competitor in MP servers, is slated to launch its quad-core Opterons code named “Barcelona”.
Intel had earlier acknowledged that AMD “has gained market share versus Intel for several quarters based on MP platforms”, but is betting on Xeon 7300 to turn things around. “The six new quad-core Xeon 7300 series processors can deliver more than twice the performance and more than three times the performance per watt over the company's previous generation dual-core products," informed Mr R. Ravichandran, director (sales), Intel South Asia.
According to Mr Ravichandran, the Intel launch had nothing to do with AMD. “Intel continues to innovate and we have been launching new platforms regularly. We will be launching 45 nanometre processors before the end of this year,” he added.
