RCom gets nod for GSM services

Anil Ambani’s Reliance Communications is all set to launch its nationwide GSM services with the telecom department deciding to allow CDMA operators to offer GSM services and vice-versa. The company on Friday made a payment of the requisite fee of Rs 1,651 crores for this initiative. Reliance Communications is already a major CDMA player offering services in 21 of the country’s 23 telecoms zones.

The department of telecommunications (DoT) said on Friday that spectrum for the alternate technology, CDMA or GSM (as the case may be) will be allocated in the applicable frequency band subject to availability after payment of prescribed fee. Allocation of spectrum for the alternative technology may be done to private Unified (Telecom) Access Services licencees on payment of prescribed fee. The fee will be equal to the amount prescribed as entry fee for getting a new UAS licence.
