Mumbai firm to market Rs 15,000 laptops

A Mumbai based computer manufacturing company, Allied Computers International-Asia (ACi) has announced that it will market its laptop models at a price of Rs 15,000 per piece. The company plans to introduce such laptop computers in the last quarter of the current financial year.
ACi senior executive Vivek Murthy said, "Currently, similar laptop computers are sold in India by companies like IBM, Compaq, Acer etc at prices ranging between Rs 40,000 and 50,000 per piece. In the 60th year of our country’s independence, ACi has planned to offer the most commonly used laptop models at around 60 per cent discount on the prevailing market prices of similar kinds of models retailed in India."
ACi managing director Hirji Patel said, "The new laptop will be priced at Rs 15,000 per piece. It will weigh less than 1 kg and will be much smaller in size than the conventional laptop currently available in India."
"Within this year, we plan to enhance our production capacity from the present 10,000 units to 100,000 units per annum. We will expand our current infrastructure facilities in places like Vasai and Gandhinagar to support this production," he added.
Mr Patel said, "The market for laptops is currently growing in India at over 35 per cent annually. The factors like rapid penetration of the internet connectivity in India, advancement of the wireless technology within the notebook computers etc will make wireless mobile computing for most of the computer users, a necessity in our country."
